How to Start a Prayer Group
Starting a prayer group in your home requires like-minded people who are committed to praying together. The purpose of a prayer meeting is to encourage others to offer prayers, share their prayer needs, and give thanks to God. The atmosphere of the group should be inviting and provide the members a safe place to share heartaches as well as joys and concerns.
Starting a Prayer Ministry
Even if your church has a prayer ministry, you can still start a group that prays on a regular basis with other believers. Sometimes it can be a bit difficult finding others to join your group. Don’t let this discourage you, however, but instead pray for guidance and help as you bring others into your fold.
Keep in mind that it only takes two people to start a prayer group. You will need a suitable location for the meetings to take place. If you feel comfortable, consider holding the meetings in each others homes, or even meet in a public location such as a park. Decide when the meetings will take place and for how long the meetings will last. For example, most groups meet either once a week or once a month and typically last between 30 to 60 minutes. Advertising your group can help increase your membership and get the word out about your in-home prayer ministry. Placing a notice in your church newsletter or community bulletin board is a quick way to spread the word about your group. For younger Christians who are holding prayer meetings, consider placing a notice in your school newspaper to find others in the same age group with the same beliefs. You can also reach out through social media like Facebook or Twitter.
Running a Prayer Group
Reassure your members or those considering joining your group that they are not required to pray aloud. Before the meeting begins, you should create a list of prayer points. Furthermore, if the meeting will take place in your home, consider providing refreshments for the members of your group. Begin the meeting with an opening prayer and remember that there is no right or wrong way. You should find the specific format and style for your prayer group that suits you and your members.
Leading a Prayer Group
Group leaders are responsible for the group and meetings, and should pray regularly for the group. As the leader, you should encourage the members of the group to support each other. A prayer group that is well organized and professional will help members stay committed and enthusiastic. To help keep everything organized, keep two separate books. The first book should contain the contact information – phone numbers and addresses – for the members of the group and the second book should be used to record the things prayed for during the meetings. Create a schedule of dates, times and locations for the meetings six months in advance and provide each member of your prayer group with a copy of the schedule. You may want to consider selecting a co-leader to help you maintain the group.
